Loss and Longing

“Why?” Stevie said, teasing him now. She could tell by the look on his face what he wanted.
“Because it’s time for the next course” he said.
Stevie smiled “the pudding won’t be ready for another ten minutes.”
“I’m not talking about food” he said.
Laughing, she got out of her seat and walked around the table towards him. She stopped next to his chair and gasped as he pulled her onto his lap. His eyes on her lips, he said “ten courses remember” and brought his mouth down on hers.
After dessert, they rinsed the dishes and stacked them in the dishwasher. Grant wanted to leave them until after she’d gone but Stevie wouldn’t let him. She reminded him of the terms he’d set when they were talking earlier and started to wash them. But when he’d pointed out how ridiculous it was with the expensive looking stainless steel, dish washer sitting right there, she’d relented and settled on stacking the dishwasher and turning it on instead.
Afterwards they sat in front of the fire and talked. The time flew by and before she knew it, it was time for her to head home. With reluctance she said “I have to go.”
He walked her to her car. “Thank you for cooking” he said looking down at her.
“My pleasure” she said with a smile “in that kitchen of yours, it was hardly a chore.”
He smiled and kissed her. “See ya soon” he said as she moved back and opened the door.
“Bye” she said and got in her car.
