Part 776

Mia spun around and blushing, she smiled at Stuart who was leaning in the doorway. A slow smile lit up his face.

 “Without taking her eyes off him she said into the phone “I’ve got to go Kate. Talk to you soon.”

Having heard Stuart’s voice in the background Kate didn’t need to ask why. “Bye” she said laughing.

“Bye” Mia said and hung up.

“What are you doing back?” she asked, grinning.

“Forgot something” Stuart said moving towards her.

“What?” she asked as she got to her feet.

He stopped in front of her. “You” he said, and leaning down, he kissed her.

Part 777

Back in town and still tingling all over from the day before, Kate decided it was her turn to surprise Josh. It was the last night of her holidays before she returned to work the next day and she wanted to make the most of it. She had spent most of the day trying to decide how to do it and had finally come up with the perfect thing. Pleased with herself, she made her preparations.

By the time Kate heard Josh's key in the door she was ready. She smiled to herself and walked into the foyer. "Hey" she said and wrapping her arms around his neck she kissed him.

Josh smiled as he eased back, now that's my kind of a welcome home.

Kate laughed "how was your day?"

"Okay. You?"

"I've been busy" she said with a grin.

"Yeah?" he said "with what?"

"A surprise."

"Oh" he said "as good as mine was last night?" he said pulling her tight up against him.

"Mmmm, maybe" she teased "I guess we'll see."

"I can't wait" he said.

She laughed "I was hoping you'd say that and moving back she grabbed his hand and lead him into the living room.

Part 780

Josh and Kate spent the night on the mattress in the living room with the balcony doors open and woke the next morning to a cool breeze blowing over them. Kate pulled the covers over her and snuggled closer to Josh.

“Any more of that” he said in a sleep burred voice “and we’ll be picking up where we left off last night.”

Kate smiled and kissed his chest “suits me” she said.

“I know” he said with a chuckle “but I hate to tell you, you have to be at work in half an hour.”

“What?” Kate said jumping up “why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was sleeping” he said with a laugh as she ran into the bedroom.

And as he heard a groan he laughed harder.

Kate appeared in the door way, her arms crossed. The clock in the bedroom had told her that she had three hours before she needed to be at work “that was mean” she said.

“Sorry, couldn’t help it” Josh said lying back with his hands linked behind his head still chuckling.

 Kate walked over to him and looking down at him with narrowed eyes she said “you’re lucky I love you.”

He reached out a hand and as she placed her hand in his he pulled her back down on to the mattress. Then rolling over to lie over her he looked down at her and said “I am very lucky you love me” and lowering his head he kissed her.

Part 782

 Kate’s first day back was fraught. She couldn’t help feeling a little out of the loop after being away for so long and it had taken her most of the morning just to get back in the swing of things. On top of that the emergency department was busy. They had a full waiting room most of the day. The only bright spot was seeing a tall, gorgeous man in police uniform stride in just before her shift finished. He was with another officer who was holding his arm against his abdomen. It had a towel wrapped around it.

She smiled at Josh as he approached with Michael “what are you two doing here?”

“I brought Michael in, he’s got a splinter” Josh said as he leaned down to kiss her and gestured to the shorter man beside him.

 “Give me a look Michael” Kate said holding out her hand.

“Thanks Kate” he said and he unwrapped the towel covering his arm.

Kate was surprised to see a deep gash along his forearm and her eyes opened wide. The wound was about ten centimeters long.

“A splinter?” she said in an accusing tone, looking at Josh.

Josh grinned.

“What happened?” Kate said as she led Michael into a treatment room. Josh followed.

“I slipped jumping a wooded fence. I was chasing a suspect.”

“Right well you’re going to need a tetnus booster and we may have to stitch that. I’ll get a doctor to have a look.”

“Thanks Kate” Michael said studying his injured arm

“As for you” she said poking Josh in the chest “follow me.”

Still grinning Josh did as instructed.

Part 783

Once outside the room where they’d left Michael Kate rounded on Josh and said “you be nice to him. That’s got to hurt.”

Josh laughed and leaning his hand on the wall close to her head he teased “what are you going to do if I don’t?”

“Don’t tempt me Josh” she said, her voice harsher than she’d intended.

The smile dropped away from his face. “You okay?” he said straightening off the wall.

“Yes, sorry” she apologised with a smile “it’s just been a hectic day.”

He searched her eyes for a minute and then nodded “okay.” Touching her face he added “you get some sleep tonight. I won’t wake you when I get home. You wake me early in the morning instead.”

She nodded “okay, I’ll miss you though.”

“Not half as much as I’ll miss you” he said and then his tone teasing again he added “now go get that doc for Michael, we need to get back on the road.”

Kate smiled “okay” and she giving him a quick kiss she left him to find someone to attend to Michael.

Part 784

At home that night Kate made herself a quick meal did some washing and then got into bed to watch tv. It was nights like this when she was home alone that she most appreciated her relationship with Josh. She remembered just how often she’d spent evenings alone before she’d met him and she smiled as she considered that long before morning he’d be there beside her. Half way through the movie she’d put on, Kate was asleep.

When Josh got home, just after midnight he found the TV still on. He turned it off and stripping off, he crawled into bed beside her. She was facing away from him and fitting his long body along the back of hers he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close. Burying his face in her hair, he inhaled and closing his eyes, he drifted off to sleep.

Part 785

Kate had set the alarm to go off an hour earlier than usual and reaching out she turned it off before it could stir Josh. She wanted to do that herself and turning to face him she began to kiss him. Starting with his hair roughened jaw her lips began to tingle due to the coarse texture. She kissed her way along his scar and then her lips touched the corner of his mouth. Josh hadn’t shown any sign he was awake but as soon as her mouth came into contact with his, Kate knew he was and probably had been for a while.

The moment her lips touched his Josh deepened the kiss and wrapped his arms around her. It had taken everything in him not to react before that. He’d been awake as soon as she’d started to kiss him.

Feeling the urgency of his response, Kate smiled against his mouth.

Part 787

A little later Kate turned to look at him “morning” she said.

“Morning” he said with a grin and rolling over to kiss her again he said “how are you feeling?”

“After that, wonderful” she said.

He chuckled “I meant after yesterday.”

“I’m fine” she said “it was just a busy day to go back to.”

“Okay” he said “and before you ask, I was nice to Michael.”

She looked at him with one eyebrow raised in silent question.

“Well nicer than I am normally” he admitted.

Kate laughed “good.”

Kissing her again he said “do you need to get up yet?”

Kate rolled over to look at the clock and then turning back to face him she said “no, not yet.”

“Good” he said pulling her close “come here.”

Kate laughed and brought her mouth down on his.

Part 788

By the end of the week Kate had settled back into work, so much so and she began to feel she’d never been away. Just as well she loved her job. Josh finished at midnight on Friday night and then they were both off until Monday. Kate decided to wait up for him. She used the hours she had to wait after dinner to get the house work out of the way. She didn’t want to spend all their time together cleaning the house. By ten she was done and after a soak in the bath she wrapped a robe around her and sat down to watch some TV. However after working all week and then cleaning the house she was exhausted and dropped off to sleep before Josh got home.

The first she knew that he was there was when he picked her up to carry her to bed. She yawned and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Sorry” she said.

“Don’t worry about it” Josh said “I’m ready for bed anyway.”

“Busy night?”

“Very” he said as he lay her down on the bed. “I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.”

“Okay” Kate said as she crawled under the covers.

Josh undressed and within minutes got in beside her. He reached out and turned out the light before pulling her to him. He sighed into her hair.

Kate relaxed against him and soon they were both asleep.

Part 789

The next day Kate and Josh slept late and after breakfast on their balcony they set out for a walk along the river.

“So Mrs Joshua what’s on for today and tomorrow?”

Kate smiled “only to keep you within arm’s reach.”

Josh grinned “I can live with that.”

“Good, because you don’t have any say in it.”

“So is this how it’s going to be now you’re my wife, you laying down the law?” Josh teased with a laugh.

“Absolutely” Kate said “so get used to it.”

“I like it when you boss me around” he whispered in her ear as he pulled her close to his side.

Kate shivered and stopped walking.

“What?” Josh said.

“Nothing” Kate said and turning around she clasped his hand and pulled him back the way they’d come.

“I thought we were going for a walk?” Josh said.

“Later” Kate said tugging him along.

Josh laughed and followed her.

Part 791

“God Kate” Josh gasped as he tried to catch his breath. She was still wrapped in his arms, held tight against his chest.

Kate smiled as she tried to fill her own lungs. She kissed his throat. “Good hey?”

“Good doesn’t begin to cover it” Josh said as he rolled over and kissing her head, he released her.

She laughed. “Well you did say you liked it when I laid down the law.”

“I like it alright” he said with a grin.

“Yeah I got that” Kate laughed.

He laughed and rolling her beneath him he said “right, my turn.”

“What are you going to do?” she said chuckling.

“I’m sure I’ll think of something” he said and he brought his mouth down on hers.

Part 792

“Hey you have Monday off yeah?” Kate said as they finished dinner that night.

“Yeah” Josh said “Why?”

“Feel like a drive?”

“Where?” Josh asked in a wary tone.

“To the farm, I’m dying to see Mia.”

Josh looked at her for a minute. “Okay but on one condition.”

Kate smiled “what?”

“We leave tonight, now, so you have thirty minutes to pack” he said with a grin.

“Josh” Kate said. “I can’t get ready in thirty minutes.”

His grin widened “thirty minutes Kate, or we don’t go.”

“You’re mean” she said looking at him through narrowed eyes.

“Yeah, but ya love me.”

She smiled. “Lucky for you I do” and leaning over the table to kiss him she added “if I only have thirty minutes to pack, you have to clear up from dinner.”

He laughed “okay, deal” and before she could move away he gave her a heated kiss.

“We keep this up and we’ll never leave” Kate said moving back to kiss him again.

He smiled. “Go” he said. “We’ll pick this up later.”

Kate smiled and headed for the bedroom.

Part 793

At ten o’clock Josh pulled into the farm yard and turned off the engine. Looking at Kate he smiled and said “how long do ya reckon before Stuart turns up?”

“Half an hour” Kate said with a smile. They hadn’t told Josh’s cousin that they were coming but they knew he’d have seen their lights when they turned into the drive. He’d be sure to come and check it out. They knew he kept a close eye on the farm for Josh.

“I say less than that. I give him fifteen minutes.”

“We’d better unpack quickly then” Kate laughed.

“No time for anything else?” Josh said looking at her intently.

Kate shook he head and couldn’t help the blush that crept up her neck as she remembered the first time she’d met Stuart when he’d caught them in a compromising situation. “Not on your life” she said, smiling.

Josh pulled her into his arms “sure” he said kissing her jaw.

Kate closed her eyes and sighed. Her body was already responding to him “no way” she said but there was little conviction in her voice.

Josh could feel her weakening but not wanting to cause her any embarrassment he moved back and released her. “Just remember where we were for later” he said.

“No chance I’ll forget” Kate said as she fought to get herself under control.

Josh laughed and went back to unpacking the car.

Part 794

Twenty minute later Josh and Kate heard a motor bike stop in the yard.

Kate smiled and said “you win.”

Josh grinned and walked outside. Kate followed him.

“Josh” they heard before they could see Stuart, the light on his bike the only thing visible.

He extinguished it and cut the engine.

“Hey mate” Josh said as his cousin walked into the pool of light at the bottom of the steps leading up to the veranda.

Stuart was grinning as he jogged up the stairs, “I thought I was going to have to kick someone’s butt, why didn’t you tell us you were coming?”

“Thought we’d surprise you” Josh said shaking his cousins out stretched hand.

“Kate” Stuart said giving her a hug, “beautiful as ever.”

“Hi Stuart, thank you” Kate said.

“One sec” he said holding up a hand as Kate opened her mouth to ask him something. He pulled out his phone, “just let me call Mia. I wouldn’t let her come, but she’ll be worried.”

Kate smiled and said “of course” as Stuart raised the phone to his ear.

Part 795

“Hey gorgeous” Stuart said and after listening for a minute he smiled and added “yes they’re definitely up to no good” then as she said something else he laughed “calm down, it’s Josh and Kate.”

Kate could hear the squeal from where she was as Stuart moved the phone away from his ear. She laughed.

“Okay” Stuart said when Mia had calmed down “see you soon.” Stuart hung up and said “hope you guys weren’t planning an early night. Mia insists on seeing you now.”

“I was hoping you’d say that” Kate said “let’s go.”

“Seems we have no say in it mate” Josh said to his cousin as they followed Kate out the door.

“And neither of us would want it any other way, right?” Stuart asked with a smile.

Josh laughed “right.”

Part 796

Stuart rode the bike back and reached his farm before the other two who were driving around by the road.

Mia was on the veranda when he pulled up and as he walked up the steps towards her she jumped into his arms unable to contain her excitement. “Are they coming over?” she asked.

Stuart grinned. “Yep, should be here any second” he said.

 “I can’t believe they’re here” she said.

“You will in a minute” he teased.

She beamed at him.

Stuart’s smile faded away “god, when you look at me like that Mia” and the words were hardly out of his mouth before his mouth was on hers.

Mia wrapped her arms around his neck and deepened the kiss.

The exchange took on a life of its own and Stuart moved forward and leaned her back against the wall of the house. But with his last vestige of will power he lifted his head moments later and wrapped his hands around her thighs to hold her up. He groaned “what are you trying to do to me? I told you they’ll be here in a second.”

She smiled “sorry I’m just so happy.”

“Don’t be sorry” he said. “I love it when you’re happy and when we’re alone again I’ll show you just how happy you make me.”

Mia smiled and as they heard the car engine approaching she lowered herself down. But before she moved out of his arms she gave him another heated kiss. Then seconds later she moved sideways, squeezing herself between the house and his hard body and hearing Stuart groan she laughed and jogged down the stairs to meet their visitors.

Part 797

Mia hugged Kate. “It’s so good to see you. It seems like ages.”

“Yeah well if you hadn’t moved while I was away, it wouldn’t have been so long” Kate teased.

Mia laughed and blushed, “so much happened all at once.”

“I know” Kate said. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks” Mia said looking at Stuart with a smile. Then turning to the other man she said “hi Josh” and she reached up to hug him.

“Good to see you Mia” Josh said. “This guy giving you much trouble” he teased pointing at Stuart.

“Constantly” Mia joked grinning at Stuart.

“Watch it you” Stuart said.

Mia just laughed.

“Come in guys” Mia said “let’s have a drink.”

“I can’t wait to hear what you’ve been up to” Kate said.

“Josh and I’ll get the drinks” Stuart said.

“Thanks” Mia said and she sat down on couch in the living room with Kate.

“So no need to ask if you’re happy” Kate said.

“I never thought I could be this happy” Mia said with a beaming smile.

“Have you found work up here?”

“Yes, it took a while but I’ve started a part time admin job at a farm supply place in town. It gives me time to help Stuart here but I’m still earning some money.”

“Sounds perfect” Kate said “and Stuart, things are good?”

“Things are amazing. I love him so much. He makes me incredibly happy.”

“That’s wonderful Mia. Do you miss the city?”

“It’s funny, but I really don’t. I have everything I need here.”

Kate smiled.

Part 799

“So how’s things mate?” Josh asked as he watched Stuart pull out glasses, open a bottle of wine and grabbed two beers from the fridge.

Stuart smiled and handed him a beer “things are good. The farm is doing okay.”

“And Mia?” Josh asked.

“Mia” Stuart said “is a whole other story. She’s amazing.”

“So you guys are good?”

“She’s the reason I get up in the morning” Stuart said and as he saw Josh’s eyebrows go up he laughed and then looked away feeling a little self conscious. “Sorry” he said.

Josh smiled and slapped him on the shoulder “you’re right. I get that mate, trust me.”

Stuart laughed again and picking up the drinks said “let’s go join the ladies” and he led the way out of the kitchen.

“Chris Kate” Josh gasped into her ear as he fought to regain his breath. He was still lying over her, his heart pounding her. “You make me crazy.”

Kate was fighting her own battle to breathe but she smiled and kissed his jaw. “We need to do that again.”

“Give me a minute will ya” he said rolling over to lie on his back next to her.

She laughed “I didn’t mean this second” she said.

He turned his head and smiled at her.

After a second he rolled on to his side to face her and rested his head on a bent arm. “You know Stuart said tonight that Mia was the reason he got up in the morning.”

Kate smiled “that’s a lovely thing to say. They’re very lucky to have found each other.”

“Yeah” Josh said “it’s the same for me though.”

“Mia is the reason you get up in the morning” Kate said feigning shock.

Josh growled “don’t Kate, you know I’m not good at this stuff.”

“Sorry” she said contrite. Reaching out, she touched his face.

He averted his eyes. “I don’t know how to say things like that” he lifted his gaze to meet hers, “but nothing makes sense without you. You’re everything.”

Kate swallowed hard around the lump in her throat. “I don’t think you could have said it any better than that” she said and after a pause she added “I love you with everything in me Josh. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank god you were walking home that night.”

He nodded “same here. I love you Kate.”

And using a favourite saying of his she smiled and said “ditto” and then she kissed him.
