Driver

Part 1

Idyn Derringer was waiting for his new client outside a serviced apartment complex at eight o’clock on Monday morning. It had been a while since he had driven a client himself but when his employee had called in sick an hour ago there was no one else to do the job. This employee was the third one to call in sick that day meaning he had already used all his emergency drivers. Unlike some bosses however he didn’t begrudge doing the work himself. It offered a nice change from the endless paperwork. As the owner of a successful car company, Idyn did a lot of paperwork. It was the price he paid for running his own business and at thirty five, employing nine drivers and one admin, he was not complaining. Still he often missed the interaction with his clients.

Tall, lean and well groomed in his dark suit with his short fair hair neat he stood next to the car with his legs shoulder width apart and his hands linked behind his back. He resisted the urge to lean against the car which was something that he would not have approved of his employees. It was company policy that his employees were to handle themselves in a professional manner at all times. When they were working they were not to appear casual in dress or attitude and while they were to be friendly and polite they were not to be overly familiar with their clients.

It was a few minutes past the appointed time that a woman who looked to be in her mid thirties walked out of the door with a purposeful stride and made her way towards him. Of average height and while not overly thin, she had a well proportioned and toned body. She was wearing a charcoal grey shirt with a matching short fitted jacket, black heels and a white shirt. Her dark hair was pulled up into a bun and as her cornflower blue gaze hit his face he struggled to catch his breath. She was gorgeous.
Idyn removed the sunglasses he was wearing as she approached and swallow hard. “Ms Bliss?” he said.
“Yes” she said.
“I’m Idyn…” was all he got out before she had opened the back door and slid into the car shutting it after her.
“Shit” Idyn said to himself as he jogged around the car. It was his job to open the door. He must be out of practice. This was not a good start. As he got in the car he wondered if he should say something, apologise, but after glancing at her and seeing her closed expression as she looked out the side window he decided to leave it and start again.

“Straight to Pacific Steel?” he said hoping to start a dialogue. He knew that the head office of the large company was where he was supposed to drop her off and then pick her up again that afternoon. It was a month long booking.
“Yes” she said without looking at him.
Her tone and her body language made it clear that she didn’t want to talk so Idyn chose to quit while he was behind and the rest of the trip occurred in silence.
