It was only twenty minutes later that Walker reappeared.
Jaya looked up from her seat on the couch.
“She’s asleep” he said and holding out his hand to help her
up he added “thanks for talking to her.”
“My pleasure” Jaya said “I like your mum.”
He smiled “she liked you too.”
Jaya was pleased and she hugged him.
After bending to give her a quick kiss he said “let’s eat.”
Jaya smiled and with his arm wrapped around her shoulders
they walked into the kitchen.
When Jaya was with Walker over the next few days she tried
not to think about the fact that she would be heading home soon. But when he
was at work and she was alone, the thought of leaving him made her heart ache.
It was crazy. She had only known him for a few days but she could not stand the
thought of not seeing him. Over and over she went through the various options
that would mean they could be together. Firstly, she could move up there. But
as soon as she had this thought she knew it wouldn’t work. Her job was in the
city, she needed to be near the theatres only a large city contained.
The next option was that he could move back to the city. Jaya
knew that was his plan in the long term but who knew how long that would be and
she would not ask him to leave his mother in the mean time. Another option was to live separately and not
see each other until things changed. Then come back together when they did. But
who knew if their relationship would be the same later. People changed and
relationships stalled without constant attention.
Or they could stay in contact and see each other when they
could, for holidays etc, but here again who knew what the time apart would
change between them. So as always, that left them nowhere. Why she lamented,
was life so unfair.
