The Locked Door

Part 9

In the second bedroom again it took less than a second to see that there was only one window.”
“That answers that” she said and thinking for a minute she said “but why isn’t there a door into the hall instead of into this room?”
“Maybe originally it was one large room but at some stage it was divided up?” he said.
“Yes, that would explain it but it still doesn’t tell me why my grandparents blocked it off.”
“I guess you won’t know that until you get in there” and with a smile he added “and that’s my cue to get back to work.” He finished his coffee and smiled at her.
Returning his smile Jaya put out her hand to take his mug.
“Thanks” he said.
“No problem” Jaya said and took the mugs back to the kitchen before returning to the bedroom.

It took Walker another ten frustrating minutes before he finally got the pin to move. Once started, it still took some time to inch the pin out, but eventually he got it, and he turned his head to grin at her.
“What do we do now?” Jaya said as excitement bubbled up within her.

“Now we prise it open but in reverse” he said and picking up a screw driver he pushed it in between the door and the jam on the hinged side using the palm of his hand. Pulling the screw driver back against the door jam, Walker inched the door open.
Jaya watched as the hinges separated and the door moved forward millimetres at a time. For a while they didn’t get far because every time he took the screwdriver out to wedge it further in the crack the door moved back into place. After the third time he handed Jaya a second screw driver and said “when I move it out see if you can push that in.”
Jaya nodded “okay.”
This time the door could not slip back and for the next few minutes they continued inching it further out of the opening until finally the screw driver could be inserted into the opening past the door. Now they could lever it out enough to get hold of it. Walker paused. Looking down at her he said “ready?”
Jaya looked up into his eyes. She wasn’t sure she was ready but she had come this far she had to continue. Taking a deep breath she nodded.
