The Locked Door

Part 3

The next morning, as planned Jaya called the charity she intended to donate to and they agreed to come and collect the items by mid afternoon. So she set to work on the last remaining room, the third bedroom. She was done before the truck arrived and sat done to drink a cup of coffee. It was the first time since she arrived that she had taken time out. She was pleased with what she had accomplished but she was exhausted and looking forward to going home.

Just as she had finished her drink the charity truck arrived and for the next few hours she was busy helping load everything into the truck. It all went to plan until they started work on the second bedroom. In this room the old wooden beds, the wardrobe and a chest of drawers were to be removed. The chest of drawers was taken out first and then the huge old wardrobe. However when the latter was moved away it revealed something surprising and a little puzzling.

Jaya stared at the door that had been concealed by the wardrobe.
“You know that was there?” one of the removal men said.
“No” Jaya said shaking her head with her eyes glued to the door. For no good reason she shivered.
“You going to open it?” the man said.
Jaya turned her head and looked at him. She was a private person and the look of avid curiosity displeased her. “No” she said.
The man shrugged and went out carrying a bed head.
Jaya went back to looking at the door. For as long as she could remember that wardrobe had sat in the same spot. That meant for at least thirty years it had been covering the door.
But the door to what? Jaya had no idea but she intended to find out, just as soon as the charity people left.

It took another hour for all the things Jaya wanted to donate to be loaded on the truck. All the while her mind was on the door.
