Loss and Longing
That night, the text that arrived as she lay in bed didn’t
surprise her. She picked up her phone and read the message “in bed, but so
lonely.”
“Same here” she typed.
“You have no idea how much I wish you were here.”
“Sorry my life is so complicated” she typed.
“I wasn’t trying to pressure you” he sent back “just stating
a fact. It’s fine. I understand.”
“Thank you” she typed
“night.”
“See ya” he sent.
The next night Grant walked into the gift shop at eight
fifty five.
Stevie couldn’t stop the blush the crept up her neck as she
smiled and said “hi.”
“Hey” he said “I wasn’t sure if I should come in.”
“It’s fine” she said and as she felt Rachel come to a stop
next to her she added “Grant, this is my best friend Rachel Green. Rachel,
Grant Rumor.”
“Nice to meet you Rachel” Grant
said offering his hand.
“I’d love to say I’ve heard all
about you” Rachel teased “but Stevie has kept you very quiet.”
Stevie rolled her eyes at her
friend, “thanks Rachel, you want to embarrass me any further?”
Rachel grinned, not appearing to
be the least bit perturbed by the censure in Stevie’s tone. “No I’m done” she
said. “Lovely to meet you Grant. I’m sure we’ll being seeing more of each
other.”
“I’ll look forward to it” Grant
said with a smile.
As Rachel moved away Stevie said
“with friends like that, who needs enemies.”
Grant chuckled. “Don’t worry about
it” he said. “You nearly done?”
“Yes. Just let me close up.”
“No worries” he said “I’ll wait
over here.”

Learning To Trust Again
Todd looked away
and was silent for a minute.
Without meeting Jake’s eyes, and looking
decidedly uncomfortable but sounding sincere this time Todd said ‘sorry I
didn’t believe you about Jemma.’
It was Jake’s turn to be surprised.
Uncrossing his arms he was silent for a minute. ‘Don’t worry about it’ he said at
length. He was curious about what had happened to bring about his change of
attitude. He asked ‘you’ve spoken to her?’
‘Yes, I finally got hold of her’ Todd said ‘I
had to borrow a phone so it wasn’t my number that appeared.’ Looking over at
Jake he added ‘she actually blamed me for her being in trouble, can you believe
that?’
‘Unfortunately I can’ Jake said ‘some
people never take responsibility for their actions. In my work, I see it all
the time.’
His eyes dropping, Todd was quiet for a
minute. Then shrugging, he changed the subject a little. He asked ‘he won’t get
off will he?’
‘I don’t think so’ Jake said ‘I’ll appear
as a witness if I have to.’
Confused Todd looked at Jake ‘how can you
do that, you weren’t there either time.’
Jake smiled ‘yeah well you weren’t the only
one he had a go at.’
‘What, you too? You’re kidding?’ Todd said
astounded.
‘Afraid not’ Jake said ‘he’s not too
bright. He’s going to be out of circulation for a long while.’ After a pause he
added ‘If it’s any consolation I don’t think they were in it together as such.
I think she just liked his jealousy and he played into her hands. She used him
as much as you.’
‘It’s not’ Todd said not looking at him.
‘Yeah, that’s what I figured’ Jake said ‘sorry.’
Nodding Todd paused and then said ‘and
what’s going on with you and my sister?’
‘I think you should ask her that’ Jake said
crossing his arms again, ready for recriminations.
‘I’m asking you’ the younger man said in a
serious tone, his eyes boring into Jake’s now.
Shrugging Jake said ‘last night she agreed
to marry me.’
Shocked Todd’s eyebrows shot up ‘what?’
Seeing his expression, Jake said in a firm
voice ‘I love her and you don’t need to worry, I won’t hurt her.’
‘You already did’ Todd said somewhat
unfairly.
‘Yeah I did’ Jake said, glaring at him and doing
his best to keep his temper under control.
It was Todd that ended up looking away.
Jake continued ‘but she has forgiven me and
it won’t be happening again.’
Looking back at Jake again and seeing the
steely determination in his expression Todd can’t help but respect it. He knew
he had to accept a large part of the responsibility for Jake lying to his
sister. He was the one who’d asked him not to say anything. Of course at the
time he hadn’t expected her to notice anything was amiss. Nor did he think
about his head injury, so he honestly hadn’t thought it would be a problem. So
while he hadn’t intentionally tried to cause trouble between them, when it
happened, he wasn’t really sorry either. However hearing Jake today ready to
defend her and knowing he wants to marry her, was causing him to have a rethink
and examine his motives. He knew Jake wasn’t really what he objected to. If he
was honest, after what Mark did to his sister, he would probably have found any
guy who showed an interest in her objectionable. And with a nod Todd conceded ‘okay,
as long as she’s happy.’
‘I’ll make sure of it’ Jake said with
determination and turned as Rebecca asked from the doorway, ‘okay to come back
in?’
Smiling Jake said ‘yep all good, right
Todd?’
Giving his sister a smile, Todd agreed ‘yes,
Jake has just told me your news. Congratulations to you both.’
Happy that her brother was okay with it Rebecca’s
smile widened ‘thank you Todd’ she said hugging him. But as he groaned she
pulled back, ‘sorry, I forgot about your ribs.
Todd shrugged ‘forget about it, I deserved
it after yesterday.’
Rebecca smiled and squeezed his hand.
‘I hope you guys will be friends now’ she said looking from one to the other. ‘You have a lot in common you know.’
Giving her a somewhat dubious look as she
moved back to stand next to Jake, Todd smiled and teased ‘well if you like him
sis, I guess he can’t be all bad.’
Rebecca looked up at Jake with a smile.
Jake winked at her and returned her smile.

Learning To Trust Again
The next day Jake and Rebecca walked back into
the hospital again. Todd had called his sister that morning and asked her to
call Jake and get him to visit him again. Rebecca didn’t tell her brother that
a call wasn’t necessary, that Jake was so close he could hear Todd’s request for
himself. Jake had shrugged and nodded in reply before pulling his fiancé into
his arms as she hung up and Todd was forgotten for a while.
Walking into his hospital room, Rebecca
smiled at her little brother. She was too happy to hold a grudge today and not
mentioning their last meeting asked in a bright voice ‘how are you feeling?’
Staring at her hand in Jake’s before
meeting her gaze, Todd said with a frown ‘not too bad.’
‘Good. Now you wanted to see Jake.’
‘Can you give us a minute?’ her brother asked
her.
Curious but not interested in pushing the
issue Rebecca nodded her agreement ‘okay.’
But before she moved away Todd grabbed her
hand ‘sorry about yesterday’ he muttered.
‘You’re lucky I’m in a forgiving mood today’
she said smiling at him ‘forget about it.’
Then reaching up to give Jake a quick kiss she
said ‘see you soon.’
He winked at her and said ‘count on it.’
His eyes followed her until she was out the door. Then turning back to Todd as
Rebecca moved out of sight, Jake crossed his arms and waited for the younger
man to speak.
‘I guess I need to apologise to you too’
Todd said with a discernable lack of warmth or sincerity.
‘Up to you, I don’t need it’ Jake said.
Surprised, expecting the other man to want
to force an apology and to be ready to enjoy the spectacle Todd just looked up
at him, puzzled.
‘The only thing that matters to me is
Rebecca’ Jake said ‘as long as she’s happy, I’m happy. The rest I don’t care
about.’ Then his expression turning hard he added ‘but if you ever attack her
like that again, you’ll have me to answer to.’ And resuming his former easy
tone and manner as if the warning he’d just issued hadn’t happened, he
continued ‘now you wanted to see me?’

Learning To Trust Again
Rolling onto his side a while later Jake
kissed Rebecca’s head and held her against him. Smiling against his chest she
sighed with contentment.
‘I hope that was a good sigh’ he said.
Looking up at him, still smiling she
replied ‘oh Jake, that was most definitely a good sigh.’
‘Good’ he said and serious suddenly he
added ‘now I’ve got another question for you.’
Looking at him, her expression curious, she
replied ‘okay.’
‘I know we haven’t known each other very
long, but after the last few weeks without you I know beyond a shadow of a
doubt that this is what I want, you are what I want, forever. Do you understand
what I’m asking?’
Not wanting to get this wrong because it
was too important. After all the misunderstandings, needing for them both to be
completely clear about everything she said with equal seriousness, ‘I think
you’d better spell it out.’
Jake looked into her eyes, ‘I want us to get
married. It doesn’t have to be straight away if you need some time to be sure
it’s what you want. But I want you to know it’s what I want, and I’m willing to
wait for as long as it takes.’
A brilliant smile lighting up her face,
Rebecca kissed him hard before replying ‘I don’t need time, I know this is what
I want too. I love you.’
Smiling too now Jake pulled her into his
arms ‘I love you’ he sighed and bringing his mouth down on hers set about
showing her exactly how much.

Learning To Trust Again
Searching his eyes for a minute Rebecca
said ‘don’t, I want you to stay. I love you.’
A beautiful smile lit up his face as relief
and happiness pumped through him. He pulled her back into his arms. ‘Say that
again’ he ordered in a hoarse whisper against her mouth.
She smiled ‘I love you Jake, more than I’ve
ever loved anyone. You complete me.’
Jake shivered and brought his mouth down
hard on hers.
As they kissed Rebecca leant back and pulled
him down on top of her on the couch.
Settling himself over her, one hand in her
hair, he let the other hand roam. He’d missed her with such desperation he was
having trouble holding back. However not wanting to be restricted by the
confines of the couch, he moved to stand before things got out of control. Holding
his hand out to her he pulled her up to her feet and led her into the bedroom. Then mistakes and misunderstandings were
forgiven and forgotten as they lost themselves in each other.
