Loss and longing

Grant must have been watching for her because he opened the door before she could knock. He smiled and Stevie felt herself relax a little. “Hi” she said.
“Hi” he said and stepping back he added “come in.”
She stepped inside and he closed the door. He stood looking at her for a minute and then said “come into the kitchen and I’ll get you a drink before you get started. It feels a bit weird actually, inviting you around to work.”
Stevie smiled “I don’t mind” she said.
“Okay, but one day I’ll find a way to return the favour” he said.
Stevie just smiled again and followed him into the kitchen. She sat down on the same seat she’d used the night before.
“Wine or a soft drink?” he asked
“Soft drink for me please” Stevie said. “I have to drive.”
Grant poured them both a tall glass of soda water over ice. “You could have had wine” she said when she saw his glass.
“Doesn’t matter to me” Grant said with a shrug. “I’m happy with this. So what are we eating?”
Stevie smiled. “Steak and chocolate” she said “but not together.”
Grant grinned “I was willing to try it.”
She laughed.  “We’re having steak and salad followed by chocolate pudding.”
“Sounds good” he said “but when does that other item we discussed happen?”
Stevie smiled, heat beginning to spiral within her. “Well from memory” she said “you promised not to distract me while I’m cooking so I guess that means after dessert.”
Grant moved towards her. “You’re not cooking now” he said, his tone serious.
“No” she agreed just as gravely, as she looked up at him.
He smiled then and picking up her hand he pulled her to her feet before lowering his head and kissing her.
